Cosmos is a network of independent, parallel blockchains called zones, each running Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus protocols such as Tendermint and using Proof-of-Stake rather than Proof-of-Work. Zones connect through shared hubs, letting separate blockchains interoperate and transfer tokens without an intermediary. ATOM is the Cosmos Hub's native token, used to pay transaction fees, stake to help secure the network and earn block rewards, and vote on governance proposals.
