Crypto World News Weekly, Ep. 3: $527M Into Bitcoin ETFs, Then the Shorts Got Squeezed

Crypto World News··4 min read

Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $527 million on Monday 19 October. On Tuesday afternoon Bitcoin jumped: by 15:20 UTC it was at $82,505, up 1.31% in four hours and 0.56% on the day, with only two of the ten biggest coins down. The traders betting against it paid for it: $226.1 million was liquidated in 24 hours, 69% of it shorts.

That is the story of the third episode of our weekly video briefing. Every number in it was captured live from our own dashboard on 20 October 2026, between 13:18 and 15:21 UTC; the Overview, On-Chain and Whales tabs were captured again at 15:20, after Bitcoin jumped. Selene and Sam are AI anchors with AI voices. The data is real, and you can open every screen in the episode yourself.

The big funds were buying

The Whales & ETFs tab read "Big money is accumulating". ETFs, companies, and fund and desk wallets were net buyers, while whales sold a net $87.2 million in 24 hours, mid-range for them over the past 32 days. Monday's spot ETFs took in a net $417 million: $527 million into Bitcoin funds, with $103 million out of Ether funds and $6.7 million out of Solana funds. On exchanges it was close to a dead heat: $1,199 million of coins left and $1,235 million arrived.

The crowd was long, on borrowed money, and the shorts paid

The On-Chain composite read neutral at 49 out of 100, up 4 points since the day before. 61.4% of traders were long, and only 13% of the 24-hour volume across the ten majors was cash; 87% was borrowed. Leverage cuts both ways: $226.1 million was liquidated in 24 hours, and this time 69% of it was shorts.

The stablecoin cash pile shrank

The Supply composite read strongly bearish at 23, down 19 points since the day before, and 15 of those points came from one driver: $865.3 million of stablecoins were redeemed on 19 October. Stablecoins are the money waiting to buy, so fewer of them means less buying power on hand. By 13:18 UTC on Tuesday, another $230.1 million had gone.

France's stablecoin tax vote led the news

Stablecoins were also the #1 narrative on our Trending board, from 19 sources and 28 articles, with a bullish mood. The alert that flagged it: France's lower house voted to advance a 31.4% capital gains tax on swapping crypto into stablecoins. Several outlets in our feed carried it, one reporting a 38-37 vote. If it passes, moving into a stablecoin in France becomes a taxable sale.

JCT and LMTS, flagged early, with warnings

The Early signals tab looks for coins moving before the market notices. The strongest on the radar was JCT, a BNB Chain pool: wallets were trading it at 10.6 times its usual pace and it was up 116.9% on the day, with no story naming it in our archive for 14 days. The safety check flagged an upgradeable contract, and the whole pool turned over 13.31 times in 24 hours: fast money, not accumulation. LMTS, a Base pool flagged the same day, was up 75.6% at 4.8 times its usual pace with no safety flags, but its pool turned over 6.41 times in a day.
