When the Fed Actually Hiked

The US Federal Reserve raised rates for the first time in three years this week, and crypto did what crypto does when the cost of money climbs: it flinched. Bitcoin closed the week at $80,262, down 1.3%, while Ether sat at $2,575, off 2.6%. TheStreet Crypto called the accompanying dot plot hawkish and unfriendly to Bitcoin, and Yahoo Finance clocked both majors sliding into the meeting itself on Tuesday. LiveMint was already asking whether the RBI would follow in October, and ETMarkets floated the possibility of 50 basis points of Indian tightening across 2026. Every asset class had to reprice at once, and digital assets were no exception.

The ETF flow data told the same story in a different language. Coinfomania reported $328 million pulled out of Bitcoin ETFs on the week, a clean signal that institutional allocators were trimming into uncertainty rather than adding. Franklin's XRP ETF managed to attract a modest $3.5 million inflow, per U.Today, a small bright spot on an otherwise defensive sheet.

Washington, Frankfurt, and a Missing Bill

The policy news cut both ways. A House panel advanced legislation to codify a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, as Crypto Daily UK reported, which is about as constructive a headline as the sector has had in months. Against that, the CLARITY Act failed, and Yahoo Finance noted XRP dropped 9% to $1.28 on the disappointment. Deutsche Bank, meanwhile, confirmed via Crypto.news that it will launch BTC and ETH custody services, one more legacy institution quietly building rails while the political weather stays unsettled.

Ethereum's own plumbing looked healthy underneath the price. Crypto Briefing flagged 13.6 times more ETH waiting to be staked than exited, a lopsided queue that says something about long-horizon conviction even as spot drifted lower. Crypto.news put the real-world asset market at $34.18 billion, with tokenized equities up 390.4%.

Every asset class had to reprice at once, and digital assets were no exception.

Geopolitics Refuses to Leave the Room

The macro was loud, but the geopolitical tape was louder. Crypto Briefing reported an Iranian missile attack on a US base that killed three American soldiers, with allegations of Chinese satellite assistance. Muscat talks between Tehran and Washington collapsed, TASS reported Iran's parliamentary speaker vowing to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until US terms are accepted, and Investing.com flagged fresh attacks on Strait shipping. Saudi and Gulf equities fell after Houthi claims of strikes on Riyadh, and Turkey signaled it would back Saudi Arabia militarily under a new Mecca defense pact. Europe formally reclassified Russia's actions as a coordinated war campaign, and NATO said it was ready for further escalation. Oil surged on the week, per ForexLive, which is precisely the wrong backdrop for a central bank that just decided inflation warranted a hike.

Whales and the Week's Loose Ends

On-chain, the largest move was a $448 million WBTC wallet-to-wallet transfer, followed by a $98 million BTC shuffle and a striking $56 million ZEC transfer, unusual company for the privacy coin in a top-five whale list. A $40 million internal ETH move, $39 million in SAND, and $10 million tickets in both SOL and XRP rounded out the flow. Elsewhere, AMBCrypto reported a $2 million exploit at Fetch.ai that sent NTX down 95%, a reminder that idiosyncratic risk does not pause for macro.

With the Fed's next signal weeks away, the RBI's October meeting in view, and the Strait of Hormuz still in the headlines, next week's script is already half written.
