Bitcoin climbed to a multi-week high before settling back under $80,000. The move up looks orderly on a chart, but the story underneath was messier: a Treasury tweak that squeezed shorts, a Fed chair debut at Jackson Hole, an escalating trade war between Washington and Ottawa, and a Strait of Hormuz situation that refused to calm down.

The Buyback That Moved Markets

The most consequential piece of financial plumbing this week wasn't crypto native. A tweak to the US Treasury's buyback program triggered a multi-billion dollar Bitcoin short squeeze, and Coinfomania followed with the case that Treasury buybacks could keep boosting Bitcoin demand. ForexLive noted the Treasury has nearly $1 trillion sitting in its TGA that could be tapped to fund those buybacks. Not everyone bought the transmission mechanism to long rates: Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo, per Crypto Briefing, argued buybacks won't actually pull yields down. A separate Crypto Briefing piece raised the mirror-image possibility that the same policy could weaken the dollar and lift gold.

Into that debate walked Kevin Warsh, whose Jackson Hole debut as Fed chair had crypto traders visibly nervous going in, according to Coincu. CoinDesk framed the setup neatly: Bitcoin under $80,000, Solana leading the majors, everyone waiting on Warsh. Glassnode reminded anyone getting comfortable that heavy supply now sits between $81,000 and $86,000.

A tweak to the US Treasury's buyback program triggered a multi-billion dollar Bitcoin short squeeze, and suddenly the plumbing of sovereign debt was crypto's biggest story.

Geopolitics Refused to Fade

The Strait of Hormuz kept generating headlines. Iran and Oman struck a deal on managing and sharing revenue from the waterway, per Crypto Briefing, even as Iran warned commercial ships of fines and seizure risk. An Israeli minister warned of strikes on Iran despite a possible US deal in the works. Crypto Briefing also reported that Tehran was vowing a strong response to a military strike.

Elsewhere, Canada retaliated with tariffs of up to 50% on US goods as the trade war escalated, per Euronews.

Crypto's Own News Cycle

Bitcoin ETFs saw outflows on Aug 28, snapping an inflow streak, Decrypt reported. Tokenized stocks drew attention across the majors.

Not all news was tidy. Crypto Daily UK reported that a Cosmos EVM bug behind a $5.7 million six-chain hack had been cleared too early. California sent a politician memecoin ban to Governor Newsom's desk.

Whales Kept Rebalancing

Large on-chain moves included a sizable WBTC wallet-to-wallet transfer, followed by $126 million in ETH shifted the same way.

With Warsh's message now digested and Treasury mechanics squarely in view, next week's tone will likely be set by whether Hormuz stays open and how the buyback debate develops.
