Geopolitics wrote the script for crypto this week, and the market largely read along in a whisper. Between fragile US-Iran diplomacy, a headline-driven Bitcoin hovering in the low $60,000s, and a stream of exchange inflows from whales, the tone across markets was cautious. BTC hovered in the low $60,000s, with a daily high near $62,914, while ETH touched a daily high around $1,768. Overall sentiment leaned bearish, and traders spent more time watching the Strait of Hormuz than they did chart patterns.

A ceasefire that wouldn't sit still

The week opened with hope: Washington and Tehran agreed to halt attacks ahead of peace talks, and as Crypto Briefing noted, crypto desks were watching closely. That optimism didn't hold. Iran skipped technical talks, citing unfulfilled US conditions, then, per Fortune Crypto, struck Bahrain and Kuwait in response to earlier US airstrikes and threatened a complete halt to negotiations as fighting around Hormuz continued. By the back half of the week the pendulum swung again: Qatar resumed all maritime activities, India lifted emergency gas supply curbs as LNG shipments moved through Hormuz again, and OPEC+ lined up another output increase. Iran, meanwhile, floated new Hormuz transit fees favoring friendly nations, with its envoy to China promising special treatment for Beijing.

Layered on top: Israeli shelling in southern Lebanon, expanded Chinese coast guard patrols around Taiwan, and a Kremlin readout of a Trump-Putin call in which Trump reportedly offered to help end the Russia-Ukraine war. Foxconn's revenue jumped but the company itself flagged geopolitical risk in its outlook. None of it screamed risk-on.

Whales quietly moved to the exits

The on-chain tape was telling. The largest move of the week was a $355M WBTC wallet-to-wallet transfer, followed by a $57M BTC transfer. Beyond that, whales were sending coins toward exchanges, not away from them: $59M in ONDO, $48M in STX, $44M in ORDI, $42M in TIA, $34M in ATOM, and $33M in BOME all hit exchange inflow trackers. Cointelegraph reported that Binance outflows tripled to $1.2B, with ETH withdrawals hitting a three-year high, an interesting counterweight to the inflow pressure elsewhere.

Whales were sending coins toward exchanges, not away from them.

Bitcoin, for its part, held in the low $60,000s even as ETF outflows and Fed uncertainty weighed on sentiment. XRP quietly overtook USDC by market value, though Crypto Daily UK questioned whether the relief rally was really just washed-out positioning.

Regulation, exploits, and the sports crossover

South Africa's SARS published draft crypto tax guidance with an August 31 feedback deadline, a reminder that policy grinds on regardless of the news cycle. China's central bank ran its debut overnight reverse repo without disclosing the rate, an opacity that didn't go unnoticed.

The World Cup kept the retail side lively. Crypto Briefing tracked prediction markets and fan tokens moving on France's narrow win over Paraguay, CAF teams set a record with 51 goals at the tournament, and Crypto Daily UK ran primers on Web3 casinos and crypto sportsbooks. Away from the pitch, Broadcom locked in deals with three hyperscalers, and Hon Hai posted stronger-than-expected sales on AI demand.

With Hormuz calming, OPEC+ adding barrels, and regulators sharpening their pencils, next week's price action will hinge less on charts than on whether this ceasefire finally holds.
